In a midweek match likely to feature several reserves and no Cristiano Ronaldo, the Red Devils will host West Ham at Old Trafford, three days after their league meeting at London Stadium. Man United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer indicated that forward Edinson Cavani could be available for that match and the Uruguayan international would definitely not be a shabby Ronaldo replacement. West Ham will also be seeking to rest starters, but it will be hard-pressed to field similar quality.
That will be the first of four straight home matches for Manchester United (3rd, 13 points), which will then host Aston Villa in Matchday 6 of the Premier League. The three points up for grabs at Old Trafford are a must-have if the Red Devils are to keep pace with the likes of Chelsea (1st) and Liverpool (2nd), two teams that are even with United on points.
Ronaldo would be expected to feature in the match against Aston Villa and then again the following Wednesday when Manchester United hosts a UEFA Champions League group match against Spanish side Villarreal in a rematch of the 2021 Europa League final.
